Music and Other Stories is a space for music lovers from across the world.

What a year it’s been! So many ups and so many downs. From Brexit to the presidential election and Donald Trump indeed becoming the next president of the United States to terrifying terror attacks in Syria, Yemen, Somalia etc. and sadly increasingly in Europe – I think everybody is happy that this year is finally coming to an end after so many crazy things have happened.
Nevertheless, besides those rather sad events I’m still in the opinion that it’s been a pretty decent year after all, personally. But also music-wise it wasn’t bad at all. I have discovered so many great artists this year, particularly in the UK music industry, had the chance to interview talented independent artists and went to so many amazing gigs (e.g. Tinie Tempah, Wiley, Nelly, Chris Brown, Krept & Konan and so on).

So many good albums and mixtapes have been released such as Rihanna‘s ANTI, Wretch 32‘s Growing Over Life or Avelino‘s FYO…. I could go on and on. It’s really hard to name the best album or song release of 2016, because there simply have been released too many dope tunes.

Here are some of my favourite tracks this year:

1. Controlla – Drake

Yeah I know, a lot of people are hating on Drizzy because apparently he doesn’t write his own lyrics, tries too hard to stay in the business by signing young artists and is way too overrated and so on. My thoughts? Haters gonna hate! Drake is amazing without a doubt, and no matter if he is writing his own lyrics or not – his tracks are absolute bangers and you can’t deny that. His latest album Views was full with good tunes. My personal favourite is Controlla because it combines a classy laid-back and melodic Drake tune with Caribbean Dancehall vibes, and because it brings back good memories.

2. It Ain’t Safe – Skepta featuring Young Lord

It’s been an incredibly successful year for Skepta! First he dropped a dope album, then he won the Mercury Prize, followed by selling out Alexandra Palace and releasing a documentary about himself. Luckily I also had the chance to see him perform live together with his BBK crew when I went to Wiley’s gig in KOKO this summer. I can’t even decide which track I like most from his album, they are all great! But if I had to choose I’d pick It Ain’t Safe (already released in 2014 but on this year’s album so it counts 😉 ) because I always get such a gangster-feeling when I’m driving through the streets with it being on full volume lol.

3. Comfy – Yungen

What Yungen and I have in common? We both really like our tracksuit and sliders, cause it’s comfy. To be honest, I only got aware of Yungen early this year but I became a fan immediately. I also really liked his single Take My Number featuring Angel which got released earlier this year, and Ain’t On Nuttin is another favourite of mine. But I like Comfy the most simply because it’s so gritty and honest.

4. Wonderful – Travis Scott featuring The Weeknd

I never used to care about Travis Scott that much, sure I listened a lot to his bangers 3500 and Antidote but that was about it. However, a couple weeks ago I discovered his latest album Birds In The Trap Sing Brian McKnight, thanks to my brother, and daaamn it’s good! There are so many decent tracks on it and it’s hard to choose the best one off it. I think Travis Scott and The Weeknd is a fascinating combination so wonderful is probably my favourite.

5. Wanna Know Remix – Dave featuring Drake

Yeah, Drake again. But this time on a remix of London’s rapper Dave’s Wanna Know. UK Hip-Hop combined with some Drake, that’s like my two favourite things music-wise. The original version sounds pretty dope as well (Find it here).

The list goes on and I’d probably still sit here tomorrow if I had to name every song I hyped this year.
