“What’s love got to do, got to do with it…” – I’m sure everyone of you knows Tina Turner‘s huge hit song from the 80’s! But do you also know the cover by the haze-pop band XY&O? No? Then let me introduce it to you!
What started out as a songwriting collab between Skip Curtis on the vocals and Tudor Davies on the beats soon turned into the band XY&O, and with the addition of Nick Kelly on the lead guitar, their unique haze-pop sound was complete.
Coming from Cardiff, the Welsh trio started out by publishing songs online which very quickly attracted US radio stations. This led to their debut single Low Tide entering number six on the Spotify Viral Charts playlist – an EP, titled Shimmer & Shade soon followed and obtained a pretty solid amount of over 10 million streams so far! Oh, and they also performed at Glastonbury Festival last year – so if that’s not super impressive then I don’t know what is!
After their gigantic success online, XY&O soon decided to change into a live band, even with live percussion. They previously signed a label services deal with Kobalt and are launching their own brand. It’s no surprise that James Santer from BBC Introducing mentioned them as “one of the most exciting new bands we have ever seen”.
Their cover of What’s Love Got To Do With It marks their first release of 2017 and signifies the reintroduction of the band before they release more in spring. Lead singer Curtis stated: “What’s Love Got To Do With It works on different levels. It’s a carnal song, but also questions a motive. A lot of people are questioning the motive behind the sociological shifts towards self service and xenophobia. We felt like the duality in the track allowed us to do the same.”
The cover reinvents Turner’s world hit in such a greatly authentic and convincing way! I bet you’d never thought to hear the track like this!
